UNC Health identifies long-term changes from its COVID-19 response

UNC Health, a nonprofit system of 11 hospitals and hundreds of clinics across North Carolina, faced a fast-moving COVID-19 threat as the state emerged as a potential pandemic hot spot. To maintain high-quality care and public trust, the organization needed to rapidly scale analytics and reporting so leaders and clinical teams could make timely, coordinated decisions across the system.

UNC Health accelerated a system-wide data strategy, building Tableau dashboards that tracked testing, utilization, PPE, bed capacity, and supply-chain risk and enabled what-if scenario modeling. The effort supported more than 30,000 internal users, fueled daily real-time decision making, and helped deliver 154,000+ virtual appointments between March and May 2020—creating lasting operational changes, stronger cross-team partnerships, and permanent adoption of data-driven workflows.
