Predictive analytics help University of Utah Health optimize telehealth revenues and balance ICU capacity during COVID-19

University of Utah Health, an academic medical center in Salt Lake City serving a six-state region, faced major operational and financial strain during COVID-19. With sudden pressure on ICU and hospital bed capacity and the risk of lost revenue from reduced in-person services, the health system turned to Tableau Software and its analytics and visualization tools to help guide rapid decisions.

Tableau Software enabled University of Utah Health to use predictive models and Tableau dashboards to optimize telehealth scheduling, track patient experience, and forecast ICU need using data such as demographics, comorbidities, and ASA scores. The results were dramatic: telehealth scaled from about 800 monthly visits to more than 11,000 per week at its peak, then stabilized at 5,000-6,000 weekly visits, while the organization said it achieved roughly 5-10 years of digital transformation in just two months.
