Case Study: PATH accelerates malaria elimination in Zambia with Tableau Software

PATH and the Zambian Ministry of Health use data to track down the last malaria parasites

PATH, working with the Zambian Ministry of Health and the Tableau Foundation through the Visualize No Malaria campaign, set out to eliminate malaria—a leading cause of child death in Zambia. The core challenge was that more than 75% of people who test positive show no symptoms, so health teams needed accurate, timely data to locate and treat the last, increasingly localized pockets of transmission.

PATH deployed Tableau software, training and support—interactive dashboards, real‑time VizAlerts SMS, and mapping—to give frontline workers and district teams the tools to monitor, validate and target cases. Within two years in Southern Province, community health workers treated twice as many malaria cases during transmission season, and the usual post‑rainy-season spike in 2016 did not occur, showing improved surveillance and a more effective, localized response.
