Nanyang Polytechnic students get hands-on data analytics experience

Nanyang Polytechnic, a leading Singapore institution with more than 16,000 full-time students, needed a practical way to teach data analytics in its School of Information Technology diploma programs (Business Intelligence & Analytics and Business Informatics). Instructors found many analytics tools demanded extensive coding, leaving students spending weeks learning software instead of gaining hands-on experience and workplace-ready skills.

In 2011 Dr. Koh introduced Tableau into the curriculum; after a one-hour demo students pick it up in their first lesson and quickly build dashboards. The change cut dashboard development from weeks to about 30 minutes, increased annual student participation from roughly 60 to 400, expanded Tableau into five modules and industry projects, and prompted wider adoption across the polytechnic for both teaching and operational analytics.
