Tableau worked with Lee Mooney, a visual analytics manager and grassroots “fanalyst,” who faced the challenge of producing meaningful football insights without access to costly club data or resources. After a data-driven strategy effort at his beloved Liverpool didn’t pan out, Lee set out to prove what could be done with freely available public data and simple tools to identify goal-scoring opportunities and undervalued players.
Using Tableau Public to blend and visualize public datasets, Lee created clear, shareable analyses that quickly gained social traction—earning a mention on Forbes—and attracted outreach from clubs and data providers. The project showed that creative data synthesis and effective visualization can deliver powerful, actionable insight even with limited budgets.
