El Paso tracks student wellness and preparedness during COVID-19 to make sure education reaches all

El Paso Independent School District, which serves more than 55,000 students in West Texas—many economically disadvantaged and with limited English proficiency—faced the sudden shift to fully remote learning during COVID‑19 and needed a fast way to know which students were reached, which were falling behind, and what supports families required.

Using Tableau, the district built dashboards fed by a districtwide survey plus Schoology and TEAMS data to track engagement, wellness, nutrition, devices, and connectivity. The dashboards enabled targeted interventions (sending devices, hotspots, meals, telehealth, or truancy follow‑up), met state reporting requirements, and gave principals actionable lists. Results included tens of thousands of survey responses, rapid improvements in participation tracking, and a reduction in invalid grade reporting from over 20% to 1.9% (affecting 7.7% of students), while informing reopening planning.
