BJC HealthCare, which serves communities in Illinois and Missouri, launched a multi‑year effort to cut supply expenses from 23.5% of net revenue toward a 19% target while maintaining and improving patient outcomes and satisfaction. The organization needed faster, more accessible analytics and greater transparency across hospitals to support data‑driven cost reductions.

BJC built a supply‑chain data mart in Microsoft SQL Server, formed an analytics team, and deployed Tableau Server and Desktop with site‑level access, internal training (325 employees trained across basics to advanced), user groups and on‑site Tableau consultants. The initiative accelerated analysis with drag‑and‑drop visualizations, fostered collaboration and a data‑driven culture, produced frequent “ah‑ha” insights, and helped drive measurable reductions in supply‑chain expenses.
