Australian Institute of Health and Welfare transforms public data into interactive visualisations

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), Australia’s national agency for health and welfare statistics, needed a way to communicate complex data to a broad audience—from the general public to researchers, planners and policymakers. After evaluating 14 tools, AIHW chose Tableau to replace static charts and spreadsheets with interactive visualisations that are accessible across different levels of data literacy.

AIHW deployed Tableau in 2017, scaled from 11 to over 200 licences, and set up a Specialist Capability Unit, training and server infrastructure to support staff. The result: 17 reporting products in 18 months, about 1,500 public vizzes in the first year (roughly 6,000 internal), overwhelmingly positive public feedback, and a stronger data-driven, innovative culture across the organisation.
