Oakland County IoT innovation eases traffic, reduces costs, and increases security

The Road Commission of Oakland County, a major road agency serving southeast Michigan, needed a better way to manage growing traffic congestion as the county’s population increased and its existing traffic communications infrastructure aged. The agency turned to **AT&T Business** to modernize its network for an intelligent transportation system, using an AT&T virtual private network to securely connect traffic signals and sensors.

**AT&T Business** implemented a private mobile network solution that linked wired and wireless capabilities to transmit traffic data securely back to the Traffic Operations Center without using the public Internet. The new system improved traffic flow and safety, enabled remote maintenance, reduced maintenance effort, and cut monthly expenses by about **40%**. The county now manages more than **700 traffic signals** on the new architecture and plans to expand it to all **1,500 signals**.
