Handheld Database Applications Solve Large Construction Problems

Dick Corporation, one of the country's largest construction firms, was struggling with slow, error-prone paper and spreadsheet workflows for tracking parts and materials across a large, multi-acre power-plant site with many subcontractors. To modernize field operations they adopted a handheld database approach: SyntegraTech’s iTrack system with a handheld application created using Visual CE from SYWARE, enabling barcode-enabled inventory records and mobile data capture.

The solution synced a master Microsoft Access database with Visual CE handhelds so supervisors could receive material, print/scan bar-code labels, move and issue items, and capture contractor signatures and badge IDs in the field. SYWARE’s Visual CE made rapid development of the handheld forms possible; the combined system eliminated duplicate data entry, enabled instant lookup by barcode, produced detailed reports by contractor/location/condition, reduced lost or misplaced items, sped up processing, and provided signed proof of receipt to resolve disputes.
