Handheld Database Application and Bar Code Scanning Improves Warehouse Management

Morgan Integrated Technologies (MIT), a systems integrator for distribution and material handling, faced the common problem of highly inefficient warehouse utilization and slow, error-prone inventory analysis. To speed data capture and eliminate manual entry, MIT used SYWARE’s Visual CE software to build handheld barcode-scanning applications for Windows CE devices and quickly create customized data-collection forms without coding.

Using SYWARE’s Visual CE on Intermec handhelds, MIT scanned SKUs into a Pocket Access database, merged the data into desktop Access, and ran its warehouse management rules to reallocate parts and choose optimal storage devices. The SYWARE-enabled solution cut project timelines from weeks to about three days–one week, removed a week–ten days of manual processing, improved accuracy, and helped clients move typical warehouse utilization from ~20–30% up to 80–90% cubic efficiency.
