University Majors in 24x7x365 Availability with Veeam and ExaGrid

SUNY Cortland, part of the State University of New York system and serving 7,000 students, needed a way to keep critical systems like its ERP, campus portal, email gateway, and web servers available 24x7x365. Its traditional backup approach was too slow, tied up production resources, and failed often enough to threaten business continuity as data grew rapidly. Systems Management Planning (SMP) recommended Veeam Backup & Replication to better support the university’s virtualized environment.

With Systems Management Planning’s guidance, SUNY Cortland deployed Veeam Backup & Replication with ExaGrid as the backup target and later upgraded to Veeam Availability Suite. The solution enabled daily backups of 10TB across 150 VMs, fast VM recovery in minutes, and replication to a DR site for failover/failback. Results included eliminating the need to rebuild VMs from scratch, reducing backup failures and storage usage, and freeing IT staff from 15 to 30 hours per week of troubleshooting so they could focus on innovation and support teaching and learning.
