St. James’s Hospital - Customer Case Study

St. James’s Hospital in Ireland took part in a pilot to evaluate how well different anti‑counterfeiting approaches detect fake medicines in a serialized supply chain. Working with Sharp Packaging and vendor Systech, the hospital tested standard European Serialization Model (ESM) scans, a DSCSA Pedigree scanning approach, and Systech’s UniSecure e‑Fingerprinting/UniScan solution to address the risk that counterfeit cartons with copied 2‑D barcodes could be dispensed to patients.

Systech deployed its UniSecure covert authentication (verified via the UniScan smartphone app) alongside the ESM and Pedigree workflows; the pilot found 18 of 50 counterfeits slipped through under ESM, 10 of 50 under the Pedigree model, and Systech’s UniSecure identified 100% of the counterfeit cartons so none reached patients. The UniSecure approach required no packaging changes, works with existing serialization, and enabled instant, ubiquitous smartphone verification—demonstrating clear measurable improvement in patient safety.
