Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services improves prevention and treatment services with modern data analytics

The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services faced the challenge of unifying its disparate data sources on the opioid epidemic to gain actionable insights. With information from treatment episodes, overdose deaths, and school surveys, the agency needed to analyze data more granularly, share it publicly with privacy protections, and provide specific insights to stakeholders. They partnered with Syntasa to implement its Substance Abuse and Opioid Response Solution.

Syntasa's solution, hosted on Google Cloud, used Looker to create accessible dashboards for analyzing and sharing data. This enabled the department to identify that 50% of overdoses occurred in just 20% of the population and to discover previously hidden hotspots. The solution allowed for more effective microtargeted advertising campaigns and transformed static PDF reports into secure, real-time dashboards for school districts and other stakeholders, leading to a more proactive and data-driven response to the crisis.
