Segmentation & Modeling of Breast Tumor for 3D Printing

Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine needed a way to turn MRI data from a breast cancer patient into clear, patient-specific 3D models that could help explain the diagnosis and treatment options. Using Synopsys Simpleware ScanIP, the team also wanted to give physicians a better way to visualize the tumor’s size and location for surgical planning.

Synopsys implemented Simpleware ScanIP to segment the breast and tumor from DICOM MRI scans, smooth the models, and export them for 3D printing. The result was a printable breast-and-tumor model that impressed physicians, improved patient understanding, and supported treatment discussions; the case study reports that the workflow produced rapid, accurate models that may help reduce surgical time and risk.
