Patient-Specific Hemodynamic Simulations of Complex Aortic Dissections

University College London needed a way to virtually replicate blood flow in patients with complex aortic dissections, where standard imaging could not fully reveal the hemodynamics or support clinical decisions. Using Synopsys Simpleware ScanIP, the team aimed to extract accurate patient-specific aortic geometries from CT data and build personalized CFD models.

Synopsys enabled the workflow by providing Simpleware ScanIP for segmentation, geometry reconstruction, and centerline measurements, which were then used with ANSYS CFX to run the simulations. The approach was successfully tested on three difficult cases, matched invasive blood pressure measurements, and produced hemodynamic insights such as pressure, flow partition, and wall shear stress patterns that helped assess disease risk and improved clinical understanding.
