Olympus Division Reduces Operational Risks with Improved Open Source Governance

Olympus Software Technology Corp. (O-Soft), a division of Olympus that develops embedded software for medical, industrial and imaging products, faced growing governance and licensing risks as teams increasingly used open source software alongside proprietary code. Leadership needed companywide buy-in and an automated way to track OSS from entry through development and the supply chain to prevent inadvertent shipping of unknown OSS and potential license violations.

O-Soft formed an OSS committee, developed product-specific usage guidelines, built an internal OSS Knowledge Site and rolled out training, and deployed Synopsys Black Duck to automatically scan and identify code provenance across its toolchain. The result was clearer visibility into unintended OSS use, significantly reduced license-infringement risk, mandatory pre-shipment scans, and broader stakeholder adoption of the compliance policy.
