Analyzing Brachial Plexus Injury using FEM

Yamaguchi University in Japan used Synopsys Simpleware software to support biomechanics research on spinal injuries and adult brachial plexus injury. The team needed a detailed 3D finite element model to analyze stress and strain distribution in the spine and brachial plexus, even though some anatomy had to be reconstructed from research data.

Using Synopsys Simpleware ScanIP and the FE Module, the university built and meshed a complex FEM from CT and MRI data, then ran simulations to study different cervical and upper-limb motions. The model showed good agreement with clinical findings, validating it as a research tool and helping inform protective approaches to reduce disability and psychological distress.
