A Synology Inc. Case Study
The University of Ottawa, home to more than 40,000 students and over 2,000 active researchers, faced a growing data-sprawl and security risk as researchers bought individual servers and cloud storage, leaving research data scattered across dozens of mediums. To centralize, secure, and scale storage while meeting requirements for backup power, environmental controls, and restricted access, The University of Ottawa selected Synology Inc.'s RS2818RP+.
Synology Inc. deployed two RS2818RP+ units populated with 12 TB drives (384 TB raw capacity): one as a central file server for 2,000+ researchers and a second as a weekly backup target, with snapshot technology planned and RX1217 expansion supported for growth. The deployment centralized terabytes of research data into a secure, easy-to-manage environment, freed IT resources from maintaining dozens of disparate stores, enabled cross-platform access via NFS/SMB/AFP/iSCSI, and delivered a cost-effective, warranty-backed solution with routine weekly backups.
