The Angmering School - Customer Case Study

The Angmering School faced growing data volumes, slow and error-prone tape backups, and difficult restores that threatened daily operations. IT Manager Marc Ginnaw needed an affordable, reliable and easy-to-manage backup solution, so the school turned to Synology Inc. and its RS3412xs NAS (running DiskStation Manager) to replace the tape-centric process.

Synology Inc. deployed an RS3412xs populated with 3 TB drives (≈36 TB usable), created an iSCSI LUN via DSM and connected it to a dedicated Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 server; this enabled routine backups of about 2 TB over weekends and 500 GB overnight, and allowed the NAS to be sited in a separate building for physical separation. The result was a well-documented, reliable backup routine, faster restores, easier management and clear scalability (thin provisioning, virtualization support and plans to connect to VMware) delivered by Synology Inc.
