Studio Babelsberg, the historic film studio and one of Europe’s leading production hubs, needed a comprehensive video-surveillance solution for its new Metropolitan Backlot that supported IP cameras (including 2K/4K), reliable motion detection, multi-stream live viewing, and a client-accessible NVR located in a secured server room. After testing standalone NVRs that failed on camera count, the Studio evaluated Synology Inc.’s Surveillance Station (deployed on an RS3614xs+ NAS) as a software-based alternative.

Synology Inc. installed Surveillance Station on the existing RS3614xs+, integrating the Studio’s diverse IP cameras, restoring reliable motion detection, and providing a high-performance client for security staff. The solution ran smoothly without extra hardware, required less than a 5% CPU increase on the NAS, reduced bandwidth and storage via multi-stream switching, and enabled secure, flexible monitoring—delivering fully functional VMS capabilities with measurable resource savings and no additional capital expense.
