Palmaz Vineyards - Customer Case Study

Palmaz Vineyards, a family-owned Napa Valley winery that runs proprietary ML systems FILCS and VIGOR to monitor fermentation and vine health, faced a massive storage and latency challenge as FILCS began generating huge volumes of time-sensitive data (one fermentation tank produced roughly 1 GB/hour). Cloud solutions proved too slow and costly for real-time analysis, so Palmaz Vineyards turned to Synology Inc. for an on‑premises storage and virtualization solution using Synology NAS platforms (FlashStation FS3017 and RackStation RS18017xs+) and features like virtualization, Hyper Backup and High Availability.

Synology Inc. deployed two FlashStation FS3017 units in high‑availability to handle about 70% of live data requests and computations, three RS18017xs+ units to store older vintages onsite, plus two additional RS18017xs+ units as offsite replication targets using Synology’s block‑level replication (with downstream sync to AWS). The on‑site Synology solution removed cloud latency bottlenecks, delivered much faster FILCS computations, kept vintage data immediately available and relevant, and provided scalable, lower‑cost storage so FILCS can continue learning from growing datasets.
