Optimum Spring Manufacturing - Customer Case Study

Optimum Spring Manufacturing (OSM), a 35‑year global manufacturer of custom wire springs, was facing repeated drive failures and disruptive downtime from an aging Western Digital WorldBook II while also seeking to consolidate backups and host business systems (Asterisk IP PBX, OpenERP). After evaluating Western Digital, Netgear, QNAP and Synology Inc., founder Marco Fortini selected Synology Inc.'s DS213 NAS for its hot‑swappable drives and RAID capabilities.

Synology Inc. deployed a DS213 with two 3TB disks using Synology Hybrid RAID, quickly configuring it for seven workstations, daily offsite backups, and file replication via Synology Data Replicator; Marco also moved phone service to Asterisk and began migrating OpenERP apps to the NAS. The result was faster file access, simple and fast recovery, an estimated savings of two weeks of employee time per year, and later expansion with a Synology DS1515+ for additional capacity and performance—along with highly praised Synology Inc. customer support.
