A Synology Inc. Case Study
Medical University of Vienna, one of Europe’s largest medical education and research institutions with 8,000 students, needed a high-performance, easy-to-manage and cost-efficient storage solution to centralize roughly 100 TB of office documents, measurement data from over 200 users and virtual machine backups across four institutes. To meet 24/7 availability, integrated backup and a future two-location backup concept without costly clustering, the university selected Synology Inc., deploying RackStation RS4017xs+ units and the DSM operating system.
Synology Inc. implemented two RS4017xs+ systems (64 GB RAM, 16×10 TB each) as a central file server for ~400 clients and as backup targets for five virtualization servers—replacing 12 virtual file servers—and centralized ~100 TB of data. Using DSM’s Snapshot Replication over integrated 10 GbE links (every 3–6 hours) with off-site replication between buildings, the setup has run 24/7 since June 2017, reduced maintenance costs, enabled self-service recovery, improved reliability and interoperability, and provided scalable, future-proof protection.
