Leica Geosystems, a global provider of precision measurement products, faced reliability and operational challenges from tape-based backups at its branch offices—defective tapes and manual tape changes were causing downtime and extra effort. Seeking an affordable, local disk-based solution that offered easy implementation, scalability and automated backups, Leica Geosystems selected Synology Inc.’s RS2212RP+ NAS.

Synology Inc. deployed the RS2212RP+ at seven branch offices and the headquarters, integrating the NAS into AD with group-policy access control and central monitoring that sends failure notifications to headquarters. The solution eliminated manual tape handling by enabling automated backups, introduced RAID 6 protection (tolerating up to two disk failures), dual-LAN fault tolerance and redundant power, and allows non-disruptive capacity expansion—resulting in continuous, more reliable backups and reduced operational interruptions.
