King's College London - Customer Case Study

King's College London’s Central Unit of Distance Learning faced a sudden surge in large video and multimedia files after joining the FutureLearn MOOC initiative, and their existing small NAS, Mac mini and external drives could not handle storage, transfer or fast editing. After a Western Digital recommendation and positive experience with a home unit, the department selected Synology Inc. for a business-grade NAS solution.

Synology Inc. deployed a DS1813+ running DiskStation Manager, giving the team a scalable, user-friendly central storage system (8 bays expandable to 18, supporting over 100 TB) and using Synology Hybrid RAID for optimal redundancy and usable capacity (around two-thirds available with RAID). The new system eliminated external drive swapping, provided faster read/write performance across Windows and Mac, simplified workflows for editors and admins, and modernised CUDL’s production with measurable capacity and productivity gains.
