Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, part of the University of Manchester, needed a reliable storage and backup solution for a new experiment that produces about 1 terabyte of megapixel-frame data each month. To protect this hard-won research data from disk failure and to enable collaboration, the centre turned to Synology Inc., using products and features such as the DS1512+, DS411, CubeStation, DSM (including Cloud Station, QuickConnect and Network Backup).

Synology Inc. implemented a dedicated DS1512+ for the gravitational-wave experiment and a DS411 for general storage, with backups to an external USB drive and a CubeStation; DSM features (Cloud Station, QuickConnect) enabled easy sharing with collaborators and mobile devices. Nightly Network Backup mirroring plus USB backups provide three copies of data (two on RAID), significantly reducing data-loss risk, improving performance and enabling straightforward scaling up to 60 TB as research data grows.
