Butler University protects 900 TB across three locations with Synology

Butler University faced the challenge of protecting hundreds of virtual machines and physical servers with a cumbersome and inefficient tape backup system. Their old solution required excessive operational support, was too slow to complete backups overnight, and limited the amount of data they could protect due to high licensing costs. To address this, they implemented a solution from Synology Inc. using its Active Backup Suite.

Synology's solution provided a streamlined, three-tiered backup strategy using on-site NAS, an off-site NAS with Snapshot Replication, and cloud-based Synology C2 Storage. This allowed Butler University to achieve a complete 3-2-1 backup of 900 TB of data. The results included a 70% improvement in storage efficiency, the protection of 250 virtual machines, and hundreds of hours saved in operational overhead per semester, all while eliminating per-device licensing fees.
