A Synology Inc. Case Study
Academic Fliegergruppe Stuttgart is a student aeronautics association at the University of Stuttgart that needed more reliable, expandable storage to meet regulatory documentation, growing 3D models and construction files. Their aging Debian SCSI file server—part of a Windows Active Directory—was running out of space and generating heat that caused summer system failures and construction delays. With limited funds they sought a cost‑effective, energy‑efficient solution that would integrate with AD, support SATA drives and consolidate multiple servers.
They replaced the old system with a Synology Inc. DS213+, using inexpensive SATA disks and consolidating backup, LDAP directory services and file sharing onto one energy‑efficient NAS. Synology Inc.’s solution restored reliable Active Directory integration, moved nightly backups to USB 3.0, reduced heat‑related downtime, and enabled members and teachers to work faster and remotely with fewer interruptions. The DS213+ now provides the capacity and performance the group needs while keeping costs and power use low.
