How to Handle Over 2k Requests Per Second

BestValue, a well‑established Romanian duty‑free retailer with shops at major airports, decided in 2015 to expand into online commerce but faced a shifting PHP eCommerce landscape and strict requirements for scalability, modern frameworks, cloud compatibility and a seamless in‑store experience (complex product variants and ticket‑based pricing). To meet these needs they selected Sylius, drawn to its Symfony foundation and flexibility for customizing checkout and business rules.

Using Sylius and Symfony, BestValue integrated KNP Gaufrette, Liip Imagine and Doctrine (Redis) cache to host assets on CDN and run on Google Cloud with disposable, auto‑scaling VMs; they customized checkout and ticket validation, decoupled background work with Enqueue, and leveraged Sylius Grid & Resource bundles and State Machines for rapid development and test automation (Behat/Gherkin). The result with Sylius: over 2 million page views in 24 hours, more than 100,000 write requests (peaking at ~2,000 req/s), and flexible promotions and operational workflows that matched their airport customer experience online.
