A Switch Automation Case Study
Austec Building Automation, a leading provider of BACnet building management systems in Australia, needed a better way to monitor and control energy use at the Hyperdome Shopping Centre. The large, single-story site had seven chilled water plants, nine transformers, and peak demand that made up nearly half of electricity costs, creating a challenge to reduce energy consumption without affecting tenant or shopper comfort. Austec turned to Switch Automation and its Switch Platform, specifically its Performance Optimization capabilities, to enhance the existing BMS.
Switch Automation implemented a solution that fine-tuned chiller plant and AHU operations, optimized temperature and pressure setpoints, and added automated demand-based load shedding through the BMS. In the first year, the project delivered $337,516 in annual energy cost savings, cut energy use by 1,220,884 kWh, and reduced peak demand by 7.7%. Overall, the site achieved a 12.6% reduction in annual energy costs while maintaining comfort conditions.
