Federal Bureau of Investigation saves space with Swisslog’s 360,000-bin robotic records warehouse

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) needed to consolidate and manage a vast quantity of paper records previously housed in 256 field offices worldwide. To automate its filing and retrieval operations in a new, secure facility, the FBI worked with vendor Swisslog to implement an AutoStore robotic storage and retrieval system.

Swisslog implemented a high-density AutoStore system, which uses robots on an overhead grid to access any of 360,000 storage bins. This solution eliminated aisles and used all available space for storage. The system greatly reduced the storage footprint, saved money on rent, and significantly cut the time required to find and retrieve files, allowing staff to focus on higher-value work. Swisslog's installation was the first robotic storage and retrieval warehouse in a GSA project.
