A SwiftStack Case Study
Pac-12 Networks, the media and TV company for the Pac-12 Conference, needed a more affordable and scalable storage tier for its rapidly growing archive of live sports video. Its existing SAN was too expensive to expand and could not keep up with demand, while other options fell short on durability, speed, openness, or enterprise-grade manageability.
Pac-12 Networks selected SwiftStack, using OpenStack Swift-based software-defined object storage to build an online archive that integrated with existing file-based media asset management tools. SwiftStack was deployed in two phases to reach 810TB of usable capacity, with a very low overall cost of $120/TB versus $1,600/TB for SAN expansion. The solution was easy for a four-person IT team to manage, avoided vendor lock-in, and helped restore 174TB of video content after a SAN failure.
