A swIDch Case Study
Kakao Bank, a leading challenger bank in South Korea, faced the challenge of enhancing security for high-value transfers while improving its user experience. Their existing one-time password (OTP) methods, which used physical tokens or required users to remember and enter PINs, were either inconvenient to issue or had inherent security vulnerabilities. Partnering with vendor swIDch, Kakao Bank sought to implement a more secure and convenient mobile OTP technology utilizing facial recognition.
The solution from swIDch was the implementation of its OTAC-based mOTP, which uses successful facial biometric recognition as a unique seed value to generate a dynamic, non-duplicating one-time password. This provided single-step identification and authentication, significantly boosting security against threats like memory hacking and eliminating the need for customers to remember a PIN. For Kakao Bank, this innovation enhanced operational efficiency by removing the costs associated with physical OTP devices and provided a faster, more convenient, and more secure user experience for its customers.
