A Suse Case Study
The University of Arkansas needed a stable, scalable way to teach Linux, SAP, open source web applications, and other enterprise systems while also supporting shared computing for other universities. To meet this challenge, the university chose **Suse** and its **SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z** on an IBM mainframe platform.
**Suse** helped the University of Arkansas upgrade to an IBM System z10 and use z/VM to create multiple virtual servers for cloud-based academic access, SAP Business Intelligence, and large data sets. The result was a highly reliable and secure environment with 99.999% availability goals, faster performance for compute-intensive applications, and major staffing efficiency—supporting the entire infrastructure with just 1.5 FTEs instead of roughly three times as many people in a distributed setup.
