A Suse Case Study
Tokyo Institute of Technology needed a reliable, easy-to-manage operating system to create Tsubame, a “supercomputer for everyone” that could support a wider range of researchers without sacrificing stability. The university chose Suse, specifically SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for High Performance Computing, to power its cluster-type supercomputer and meet the demands of its complex research environment.
Suse implemented SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for High Performance Computing, enabling Tsubame to scale efficiently across thousands of cores and later GPUs while maintaining strong reliability and manageability. The results were significant: Tsubame 1.0 surpassed Earth Simulator and ranked seventh globally, Tsubame 2.0 delivered a 30-fold performance improvement and ranked fourth worldwide, and Tsubame 2.5 reached 5.7 petaflops—the best performance of any cluster-type supercomputer in Japan.
