A Suse Case Study
Swinburne University of Technology, a public university in Melbourne, needed more compute and storage capacity for growing research demands while staying within a tight budget. The university also wanted on-premises storage for its NeCTAR OpenStack-based research cloud, but public cloud options were constrained by latency and data-sharing restrictions, and a capacity-based storage model would have become too expensive. SUSE Enterprise Storage was used as the vendor’s software-defined storage solution.
Swinburne selected SUSE Enterprise Storage, implemented with help from SUSE Partner Aptira, and deployed two highly available clusters with replication between data centers. The result was a flexible, high-performing storage platform that scales easily on commodity hardware and supports research cloud and backup needs. SUSE helped Swinburne deliver on-premises storage at roughly half the cost of an equivalent public cloud service, while reducing CAPEX and avoiding costly hardware refresh cycles.
