A Suse Case Study
Sony Italia, the Milan-based division of Sony Corporation, faced growing pressure on its local server infrastructure as data volumes and user numbers increased, hurting performance and reliability. With a limited budget, replacing all 30 physical servers was not feasible, and the company also wanted to reduce heat and electricity usage, so it turned to Suse for a more cost-effective virtualization approach.
Suse implemented SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with built-in Xen virtualization, plus SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension for clustering and resilience. Sony Italia consolidated 12 physical servers onto just two machines hosting virtual servers, cut server acquisition costs by an estimated 60%, reduced power and cooling needs, and can now provision new virtual servers in about five hours.
