Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center - Customer Case Study

The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) needed a powerful, shared-memory supercomputing platform to support its NSF XSEDE proposal and accelerate advanced scientific research. PSC turned to Suse, using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on the SGI UV 1000 system to meet the strict performance, security, and scalability requirements of its Blacklight research platform.

Suse implemented SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to fully support the capabilities of the SGI shared-memory machine, enabling easier programming, faster processing, and strong security. The result was the world’s largest cache-coherent shared-memory system, supporting 1,300+ users across 373 projects; in one case, processing time dropped from nearly two weeks to less than eight hours.
