NWK, a leading agricultural service provider in South Africa, needed tighter control over its business systems and financial processes to support growth across its many outlets and subsidiaries. After 18 years on IBM z/VSE, the company looked for a more flexible and better-supported platform and chose Suse SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for IBM System z.

Suse helped NWK migrate its z/VSE workload to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on an IBM z114 with IBM storage and backup systems. The new setup improved processing to 600 MIPS from 172 MIPS, cut the total backup window for nine databases to about two hours from roughly two and a half hours for one database, and made direct-to-disk backups at least 100% faster, while delivering the stability and flexibility NWK needed.
