Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) - Customer Case Study

Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ), the central computing centre for Munich’s universities, needed a reliable and powerful high-performance computing platform for researchers across Europe while also improving energy efficiency and manageability. To meet these goals, LRZ chose SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Suse for its SuperMUC supercomputer.

Working with Suse and IBM, LRZ implemented SuperMUC on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, using automation tools like AutoYaST and power-saving features to simplify administration and cut energy use. The result was a major performance boost, with overall computing power increasing by a factor of 50 to 60, roughly 20 times more performance per watt than the previous environment, and a smooth migration from Itanium 2 to x86 architecture.
