Irish Centre for High-End Computing - Customer Case Study

The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) needed to replace its aging supercomputing infrastructure with a more stable, reliable, and high-performance platform that could support a wide range of academic and business users, while also meeting tight budget and price-performance constraints. ICHEC chose Suse Linux Enterprise Server for its new Fionn supercomputer to help consolidate multiple architectures and improve operational efficiency.

Suse implemented SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on the SGI ICE X-based Fionn system, delivering a lighter, easier-to-manage HPC environment with strong performance and flexibility. The result was dramatically improved stability, computational power, and cost savings, including a system that quadrupled computing resources for Irish scientists and enabled far more demanding simulations; Fionn was also ranked first for power efficiency among x86 supercomputers on the 2014 TOP500 list.
