A Suse Case Study
The Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology needed faster access to high-performance computing resources and the latest computational tools to handle rapidly growing plant research data. As its scientists began working with next-generation sequencing and biological imaging, the small HPC team struggled to keep up with requests for new environments and software stacks. Suse, using SUSE OpenStack Cloud alongside SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, helped the institute move toward a more flexible private-cloud model.
Suse implemented an enterprise-ready private cloud that integrated with the institute’s existing HPC cluster, enabling self-service access to virtual machines. The result was a major reduction in provisioning time: scientists can now get their own VMs in as little as 10 minutes instead of waiting weeks or months. This also improved agility, reduced the HPC team’s workload, and supported faster experimentation and innovation across the institute.
