Case Study: European Space Agency achieves long-term reliability and maintainability with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server

A Suse Case Study

European Space Agency - Customer Case Study

The European Space Agency’s European Space Operations Center (ESOC) needed a stable, long-term operating system for its deep space ground stations and spacecraft mission control infrastructure. To improve maintainability, standardize a previously mixed environment, and support decades-long missions, ESOC turned to Suse and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

Suse implemented SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and 11 as the baseline platform, using YaST and AutoYaST for consistent configuration and deployment across ground stations and mission control systems. The result was faster installations, better configuration control, strong reliability, and long-term support; ESOC had about 350 systems running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server in mission control and around 390 instances deployed overall, with about 60 more ground-station systems planned for migration.
