Case Study: EUROCONTROL achieves lower data center costs and greater flexibility with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z

A Suse Case Study

EUROCONTROL - Customer Case Study

EUROCONTROL, through its Maastricht Upper Area Control Center, needed to handle growing air traffic workloads while keeping safety, performance, and availability high. Its existing physical-server approach was driving up costs and making IT more complex, so it turned to SUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for a more scalable virtualized infrastructure.

SUSE implemented a hybrid virtual environment on IBM System z and x86 hardware, using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to consolidate around 50 virtual Linux servers. The result was a simpler, more reliable environment with lower floorspace and power needs, more than a 20% cost advantage over alternatives, and an expected 20% reduction in electricity use and over 50% lower CO2 emissions, while also reducing administrative effort and costs.
