A Suse Case Study
ETOS, the leading health and beauty care retailer in the Netherlands, needed to replace aging RS/6000 machines running AIX and build a more stable, cost-effective IT infrastructure for its centralized distribution center. Downtime was especially costly because it could delay inventory delivery to its 432 stores. ETOS evaluated Linux-based options and selected SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Suse to modernize its environment.
Suse implemented SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on 15 Dell PowerEdge servers, supporting ETOS’s logistics application, Oracle databases, Apache web servers, and storage/backup appliances. The result was zero unexpected downtime, Oracle systems running 10 times faster, and end-of-day store processing reduced from 4–6 hours to just 25 minutes. ETOS also cut hardware costs by 80 percent, software costs by 20 percent, and lowered overall IT costs by ¤650,000.
