A Suse Case Study
eThekwini Municipality, a South African local government serving more than three million residents, needed to modernize its core systems and user interfaces while keeping enterprise-class reliability, high availability, and portability. The municipality chose Suse and its SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z on the IBM z114 mainframe to move from z/OS and terminal-based applications to a more open, web-ready platform.
Suse implemented SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z across multiple IFLs and virtualized LPARs, supporting IBM DB2 and WebSphere. The result was a stable platform for handling 30 billion ZAR in annual payments, software licensing costs reduced by up to five times, and the avoidance of up to 60 standalone servers, while also lowering transaction costs to below 10 cents and improving flexibility for future migration.
