Dundee City Council - Customer Case Study

Dundee City Council, the municipal administration for Scotland’s fourth largest city, needed a way to reduce IT infrastructure size and complexity while keeping business-critical systems reliable and within budget. To support server virtualization and vendor-certified applications across mainframe and x86 environments, the Council standardized on Suse Linux Enterprise Server, including SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z.

Suse implemented a stable, secure, flexible platform that now spans more than 150 Linux environments, with about 70 to 100 virtual servers on its IBM mainframes and roughly 100 x86 instances. The result was a smaller, more efficient infrastructure that replaced at least 50 under-utilized x86 machines, lowered power and cooling needs, improved supportability, and helped Dundee City Council cut costs and carbon emissions while continuing to expand Linux use.
