Holy Cross Energy - Customer Case Study

Holy Cross Energy, a nonprofit rural electric cooperative serving 43,000 members in western Colorado, needed a way to modernize its grid as DER adoption grew. The utility wanted to improve reliability, power quality, resilience, data security, and renewable energy integration, but as a small organization with limited staff and budget, it faced challenges coordinating multiple systems and vendors. Survalent Technology was part of the effort to help HCE address ADMS and DER interoperability needs.

Survalent Technology supported a collaborative ADMS interoperability project that aimed to integrate legacy and advanced applications on a single centralized platform, using protocols and algorithms to monitor and control DERs more effectively. The solution helped HCE test real-world grid services, add forecasting and control capabilities, and prepare for flexible load and storage applications. HCE reported improved visibility and control, and NREL found that ADMS-controlled DERs paired with a time-of-use rate could reduce electricity costs for all-electric residential consumers by 20.7% while also lowering local distribution-grid impacts.
