Vrije Universiteit Medical Centre - Customer Case Study

Researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Medical Centre (VUmc) faced capacity limits on their private Research Cloud during peak usage times. To address this challenge without building more expensive infrastructure, they partnered with vendor SURF to implement a solution using its HPC Cloud service.

SURF implemented a 'community cloudbursting' solution by connecting the VUmc Research Cloud to its HPC Cloud via a dynamic lightpath. This provided secure, reliable, and seamless additional capacity for researchers, who no longer had to manually transfer large datasets. The solution gave VUmc researchers access to low-cost or free computing power during peaks and prevented the IT department from having to decline resource-intensive research requests.
